'Weight Loss' Series.
Summer time is here, which means many of us are busy with picnics,
holidays, vacations, a lots of food and…extra calories and, possibly,
the extra weight gaining. If you are like many people today who want to
know how to manage weight, you might find helpful information in this
news letter.
Losing weight is a very complex issue and there is no magic bullet that
will work for everyone. Finding the cause of the obesity is always a
good starting point, but often it's simply that people take in a lot
more calories than they burn off.
The basic arithmetic of weight loss is that each pound of body fat is
worth 3,500 calories. Therefore, to lose one pound a week, a person must
either take in 500 calories less each day, bum 500 calories each day
through exercise or better yet, combine the two. This can be done by
drinking a large glass of water instead of a soft drink (250 calories
saved) and walking for 2 1/2 miles (250 calories burned).
As you can see, this formula is fairly simple. The trick, however, is keeping it up
for an extended period of time. In order to maintain weight loss, we
need to calculate daily caloric requirements by multiplying the
person's weight by 10 and then adding 30% to that amount. For example if your weight is 150
you need 1500+450=1950 calories/day. If the person
is moderately active, consuming this many daily calories should help in
maintaining weight. Anything less should result in weight loss.
General Guidelines for Weight Loss
Avoid white flour, white rice, processed foods, fast foods, junk food, sugar, sweets, soft drinks, artificial sweeteners, processed meats, and table salt.
Consider carbohydrates with low GI (glycemic index). Choosing low
GI carbs - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood
glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health reducing
your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable
weight loss.
Consume more fresh organic fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, brown rice, cold-water fish (such as salmon), soy, nuts and seeds (in small amounts), filtered water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices.
Use only extra virgin olive oil for cooking and stay away from hydrogenated or partly-hydrogenated oils in any form (eg margarine); use fatty foods such as avocados, olives, and nuts and seeds in moderation.
Limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine.
Never skip breakfast.
Eat small meals throughout the day.
Make lunch, not dinner, your main meal of the day.
Chew your food good before swallowing.
Get regular exercise, such as running, swimming or walking Increase your flexibility through Yoga and stretching exercises. Do strength training at least twice a week.
Do not go grocery shopping when hungry and do not keep unhealthy food in the house.
Don't give into your cravings immediately. Cravings are like waves, they tend to peak and then subside If you can keep busy for a little while the craving will usually pass on its own.
Weight Loss Supplements
Nutritional supplements, including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
should be a part of any person's healthy lifestyle. With all the
pollutants in the air and water, all the chemicals found in our foods,
and all the fruits and vegetables grown in depleted soil, we really need
all the help we can get. Nutritional supplements truly can make a
difference in energy levels, immune function, psychological well-being,
and quality of life. Aside from a good multivitamin/ mineral, certain
supplements can also be helpful in supporting the body during weight
loss.
There are certain supplements that can be a part of a
healthy weight loss regimen and may help with hunger and willpower.
These may be beneficial to those who need a little help. These
supplements will not bring about incredible results but losing weight
should not be an overnight affair. It is not healthy to lose any more
than 1-2 pounds per week.
